Studio or 'available' light?

When it comes to picking a style for your company's headshots, the first big decision is usually what sort of light to use. Studio lighting – bringing portable equipment to the office – can take a little more time, but it means you have complete control over the consistency of the style, whatever the time of day or year.

Natural lighting, often from a window, but also quite easily from the available office lighting, can be quicker, and helps keep costs down for follow-up shoots, as there's much less equipment needed.

Careful use of position and expression in the shoot, and of tone and texture work afterwards, means that portraits can be consistent regardless of when they're taken. In this case a colour palette has been chosen that complements the organisation's website.

Studio lighting

High- or low-key (light or dark), colour or black & white, studio lighting brings sharpness, clarity and professionalism to the photo.

With or without context?

The other big choice to make is between a classic 'headshot' against a neutral background, or something wider that shows the working environment. These examples show how a single building can yield many possibilities for feature portraiture.

Feature portraits are often taken in available light, but can also be taken with studio lighting for added impact.

There's an infinite number of styles you can go for, of course. It's useful to work with one of your team and try various styles to agree what works best for you. No two organisations have the same requirements.

Whatever your choice, we'll shoot the pictures using the very best equipment, at very high resolution. That means the same set can be reused in every context you need - whether as a magazine feature spread, or cropped for a speaker bio shot. You'll be able to adapt the photo to fit whatever design you require.
